Curator High

The Curator High program at Museum of Glass introduces young people to the conceptual and vocational components of working in the curatorial field. In this professional training program, students work with each department at Museum of Glass to conceive of and develop an exhibition inspired by a unifying theme to be installed in the Museum’s Grand Hall. This experience is designed as a curatorial intensive that strives to expose high school students to career options in museums.

The program schedule consists of three key components: learning the organizational structure at museums, gaining professional development in the field, and curating and promoting the exhibition.  Students have access to a portion of the Museum’s Permanent Collection (as well as resources like the Museum Library and TMS Database) to put together the exhibition. The teens are expected to present well-articulated ideas in their peer discussions on why each selected piece aligns with both the exhibition theme and the other chosen works. Museum staff mentor participants throughout the art selection process and installation.

Marketing

Curator High also provides valuable experience in how to effectively promote a project. Students learn to research and write informational text that provides context to the selected pieces and inspires further conversation. Through the creation of an exhibition summary, a marketing identity is established for the show. Additionally, participants create a weekly blog of their experience of working at Museum of Glass to be approved and released by the Marketing Department and learn social media strategies for their content.

Public Program

Curator High exhibitions are accompanied by a public program that is planned and executed by the participants. This event is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in marketing, promotion, and logistical planning.
