Cartoon Chicks by Anu Penttinen

Anu PenttinenFor the fifth consecutive year, the Museum of Glass and Finland’s iittala, Inc. are teaming up for a weekend dedicated to birds and bird lovers. This three-day event features the U.S. debut of the newest iittala Birds, Cartoon Chicks, designed by Anu Penttinen, along with the newest Bird by Toikka species, Ruffed Grouse, created specifically for the Museum of Glass. BIRD LOVERS’ WEEKEND SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
(All events are scheduled 10 am to 5 pm Friday and Saturday and 12 to 5 pm Sunday unless otherwise noted.)

Anu PenttinenRuffed Grouse Hatches
Ruffed Grouse,, designed by Oiva Toikka during his 2007 Museum of Glass Hot Shop residency and created as a limited edition, will be offered for the first time, exclusively through the Museum Store.

FREE reception in the Museum Store
6 – 8:30 pm Friday
Meet iittala's newest designer, Anu Penttinen, and join us as we introduce Ruffed Grouse. Anu will personally sign her new Cartoon Chicks, from 7:15 to 8 pm.

iittala Bird Demonstrations in the Hot Shop
Friday, 10 am to 8 pm; Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday 12 to 5 pm
Visiting Artist Anu Pentinnen and iittala master glassblower Arto Lahtinen will work with the MOG Hot Shop team creating both Toikka- and Penttinen-designed birds. Anu will design and the Hot Shop team will make an exclusive bird to commemorate the fifth year anniversary of this event.

Live Bird of Prey Visits from Pt. Defiance Zoo and Aquarium
1 – 2 pm Friday

Artist Larry Calkins assists a Family Day participantHands-On Art Activity: Amazing Avians
10 am – 3 pm Friday; 11 am – 5 pm Saturday; 12 – 5 pm Sunday
Bend and twist wire into a fantastical bird sculpture, create a bird stamp or hatch your own bird from clay with artist-in-residence Larry Calkins.

Boxed Birds Art Activity
1 – 4 pm Saturday
Create three-dimensional cardboard birds with mixed media artist Jennifer Adams.

Pale Male
Pale Male is s film about a red tail hawk living in New York City, produced by the NYC Audubon Society and narrated by Joanne Woodward. The film will rotate throughout the day in the Museum Theater.

Panel Discussion: Mysteries of the Marbled Murrelet
1 – 2 pm Saturday

  • Joseph Gregory Rossano, creator of Mirrored Murrelets
  • Maria Mudd Ruth, author of Rare Birds: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet
  • Dr. Astrida R. Blukis Onat, archeologist and president of BOAS, Inc., a Seattle archeological and cultural resource management consulting company
  • Deanna Lynch, a fish and wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Melissa G. Post, Museum of Glass curator, moderator
