Description
The New Media Producer is a creative professional who is a jack-of-all-trades in new media: a webmaster, web designer, web developer, information architect, graphic designer, copywriter, editor and photographer all rolled into one. The position is an integral part of the Museum’s Education Department. The New Media Producer is responsible for design, development and maintenance of all types of web and multimedia content for the Museum, including the website, kiosks, interactive applications, digital photography, blogs, podcasts, streaming video, mashups and multimedia presentations.
Requirements
- Must have strong graphic design skills
- Must understand principles of effective communication in a variety of media
- Must understand interface design and usability
- Must excel at manipulating images in Photoshop
- Should be familiar with Illustrator and InDesign
- Must have strong coding skills
- Must excel at writing standards-compliant XHTML and CSS from scratch
- Must be comfortable with writing and using code in PHP, Javascript, Actionscript, XML
- Must understand database structure and be comfortable using MySQL
- Must be comfortable with Flash and be able to create small applications (kiosks, multimedia presentations, etc.)
- Must have some photography skills
- Must have a solid understanding of SEO best practices
- Must be able to learn new technologies quickly and independently
- Must have a good understanding of trends on the web
- Must be able to communicate well about technical topics in nontechnical language
- Must have the ability and desire to work with other departments in an integrated way
- Must be creative
- Must have a sense of humor
- Must be able to write engaging educational copy
- Must have bachelors degree or higher
- Must have at least 3 years relevant professional experience
- Must be able to work occassional evenings and weekends.
In addition, a background in any of the following would be a strong plus: art, teaching, video production, audiovisual equipment, computer science.
Responsibilities
- Develops long-range plan for Museum’s website and other new media initiatives
- Designs and develops all aspects of the website including programming, interface design, information architecture, application architecture, database structure, content editing, mashups, etc.
- Designs and develops templates for email newsletters
- Works closely with the Audiovisual Producer to develop media content for a variety of applications at the Museum
- Works closely with the Public Relations Manager to keep the website up to date
- Works as project manager for all web based projects including online curriculum
- Develops interactives for the web, CD-ROMs, kiosks and other applications
- Creates multimedia presentations for use at tradeshows, conferences, etc.
- Helps to implement kiosk and other systems to support interpretation in the galleries and in other areas of the Museum as appropriate
- Guards the Museum’s brand on the web and ensures a consistent look and feel across the website
- Assists in development of web content, graphics and possibly video for other Museum programs
- Works with providers of web services to ensure proper operations and consistent service
- Photographs Visiting Artist residencies, auction donations, Museum events and more
- Writes web educational web content, blog posts, other text on the web and text for various Museum projects
- Produces and records educational podcasts
- Other duties as assigned
