Martin Blank's Biography
Martin Blank has admired the grace and flow of the human form since childhood, digging into clay at the boston Museum of Fine Arts at age 13. After earning a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1984, under the tutelage of Bruce Chow, Blank began his professional career creating with Dale Chihuly. There, he earned a place as an integral part of that team for 11 years before opening his own studio.
Blank's work is about carving space. Creating tension between sculptural forms that create compelling landscapes that are created by the juxtaposition of sculptural elements. Dynamic sculpture is as much about the mass as it is the void. "It always intrigues me when the forms reveal a negative space that is as vital and potent as the actual objects."
"I would call myself an intuitive artist. I work on the way forms relate to each other to cut a line in space that flows, turns and carries the eye around the piece."
Blank is swiftly establishing himself as one of America's most significant figurative sculptors. Blank's work is on display in galleries throughout the United States and in museum collections at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Glass, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Millennium Museum Beijing, The Shanghai Museum of Fine Art and the American Embassy in Slovakia. In 2004, The Lurie Company commissioned Blank to create a dynamic 48' foot sculpture for the lobby of the prestigious 120 South LaSalle Street Building Chicago, IL. The sculpture is included in Chicago's "Great Art and Architecture" city tour. In 2004, the Arthur M. Blank Foundation commissioned Blank to grace the courtyard with classically elegant sculptures for their headquarters in Atlanta.
