Made at the Museum: The Visiting Artist Collection
Ongoing
Organized by the Museum of Glass
The Museum of Glass opened its doors in July 2002 with a mission to provide a dynamic environment for visitors to experience and appreciate the medium of glass and the creative interaction between artists and art forms in contemporary art. In support of this mission, the Museum inaugurated the Visiting Artist Program.
Each month, and every week in June through August, the Museum invites an artist or team of artists to participate in a Hot Shop residency lasting 3 to 5 days. Our priority is to invite artists whose work is exhibited in the galleries, or whose work is thematically or technically linked to the exhibition program. Each artist conceives a project to be produced in the Hot Shop with the assistance of the resident Hot Shop team. For some artists, this is their first experience working with glass. Others are masters of the medium.
Since the program's inception, over 50 internationally established artists, as well as emerging artists from the region and abroad have participated-exploring, inventing, and creating with glass. Offering a diverse mixture of culture, style, concentration, and expertise, each artist brings a unique energy and excitement to the Hot Shop, giving visitors the rare opportunity to witness artists at work.
After each residency, the Museum and the artist select one work of art. These diverse and beautiful objects comprise the Visiting Artist Program Study Collection. Made at the Museum, displayed in Art Alley and on the Hot Shop balcony, features a selection from the collection rotated throughout the year as new works are created.
